Lion

Namibia is home to some of the most spectacular sites in the world. This country has something for everyone, from its rugged deserts to its lush grasslands and rivers. With over 24,000 elephants and only 2.5 million people, it’s safe to say that Namibia is truly wild at heart. But it’s not just about the majestic wildlife. It is home to some breathtaking landscapes in the world. From towering red dunes to rugged coastlines, here are the 5 best places to visit in Namibia you cannot miss on your Namibian adventure.

1. Sossusvlei:  A Desert Oasis

Sossusvlei desert oasis

Sossusvlei is a natural desert oasis. Except, you’ve got towering red dunes and a dry riverbed rather than palm trees and crystal-clear water. But it is also beautiful. When I first laid eyes on the dunes, I couldn’t believe my luck. I felt like I was on a Lawrence of Arabia movie set. The dunes were genuinely mesmerising, with their deep red colour and rippling shapes. I couldn’t resist climbing to the top and taking in the panoramic views. And let me tell you, the climb was a challenging feat. But the view from the top? Worth every step. However, Sossusvlei isn’t just about the dunes. There’s also a dry riverbed with unique vegetation and a small lake. It’s hard to believe that such a vibrant environment could exist in the middle of a desert. But that’s the magic of Sossusvlei. And let’s not forget about the night sky. With no light pollution, the stars shine bright like diamonds. I spent hours lying on my back, staring up in awe. In short, Sossusvlei is a desert oasis that will leave you speechless and in awe. It’s a must-visit for anyone travelling to Namibia. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a camel.

2. Etosha National Park: The Wildlife Retreat

Etosha national park with beautiful animals

Etosha national park is where lions roam free, and the elusive black rhino makes a rare appearance. This wildlife retreat is perfect for getting up close and personal with some of Africa’s most iconic animals. But be warned, the park’s 22,000 square kilometres of savannah and salt pans are not for the faint of heart. It’s not uncommon to come face to face with a herd of ornery buffalo or a pride of lions taking a nap on the road. My personal experience at Etosha was nothing short of exhilarating. I had the pleasure of watching a group of elephants playing in a waterhole. But the real highlight of my visit was when a pack of hyenas visited our safari vehicle at night. All jokes aside, Etosha National Park, is an exceptional place. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a wild and unforgettable adventure. Remember to keep your windows rolled up and your wits about you.

3. Swakopmund: The Skeleton Coastal Gem

Skeleton coastal area

The Swakopmund skeleton coast has endless sunshine, refreshing sea breezes, and sandstorms. This coastal gem has a temperamental side, but don’t let that stop you from visiting. This place is the perfect mix of old-world charm and modern amenities. Take a stroll down the main street, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time with its colonial-era architecture. But don’t worry. You won’t have to sacrifice creature comforts for a taste of history. You’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants, as well as a variety of shops and attractions. Don’t forget the top attraction of the area, the beach. Whether you’re a sun-seeker or just looking for a place to soak up the views, Swakopmund’s beaches have covered you.Swakopmund also offers a wide range of outdoor activities. From hot air balloon rides to quad biking, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Take a trip to Sandwich Harbour to see the beautiful dunes and rich biodiversity. The town also has a variety of museums, such as the Kristall Galerie. It is a must-see for those interested in gems and minerals. In short, Swakopmund is a seaside gem that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and outdoor activities. So pack your bags, put on your sunscreen, and get ready for a wild ride in this charming coastal town.

4. Fish River Canyon: Majestic View

Fish River in south of Namibia

Fish River Canyon, located in the southern part of Namibia, is a natural wonder that will leave you speechless. The Canyon, which is over 180 km long, 27 km wide, and 550m deep, is the second-largest canyon in the world. It was formed over 500-600 million years ago by the erosion of the Fish River. The result is a breathtaking landscape that will leave you in awe. As you hike the trail, you will come across various terrains like rocky cliffs, sandy pathways, and rugged landscapes. The track is 85 km long and takes around five days to complete. However, this walking lane is not for the faint-hearted, as the temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius. However, the views are worth the effort. For those who prefer not to hike, there is a viewpoint where you can witness the Canyon’s grandeur from the comfort of your car. The place is located in the Hobas Camp. From here, you can see the Canyon’s vastness and the winding of the River. Not to forget the impressive views of the area. These include orange and red-hued rock formations as well as Fish River. The canyon is a natural wonder that should be on every traveller’s bucket list. Its rugged beauty and the vastness of the landscape are something that you can only experience in person.

But don’t let the ruggedness fool you. Damaraland also has many stunning landscapes that can amaze you.
